Do I need a prescription?

Under California law, patients may receive treatment from a licensed physical therapist for 12 visits or up to 45 days without a physician referral or prescription. However, most insurance companies will not cover physical therapy services without a physician referral/prescription. Should you plan to utilize your insurance benefits to cover the cost of services, you will need a physician’s prescription for physical therapy.

What will my first session be like?
Your first session will be an evaluation where the physical therapist will listen to your medical history, your symptoms, and goals. You will have a general orthopedic evaluation followed by a pelvic floor evaluation. The pelvic floor evaluation will consist of both an external and internal evaluation. The internal evaluation may be done vaginally or rectally – or not at all. Depending on your condition and symptoms, your physical therapist will work with you to determine what the best course of action will be.

Can I come in on my period?
Absolutely! Menstruation is a natural, normal physiological function. If you are comfortable with an internal treatment during your menstrual cycle, you may advise the physical therapist. If you prefer to avoid internal treatments during your menstrual cycle, there are often various orthopedic concerns related to your symptoms that be effectively addressed during your appointment. We will prioritize your comfort while addressing associated symptoms.
